Description

Drying skin is a wonderful, unusual piece by Mosesee Pootoogook, an Inuit artist from Cape Dorset. This is a great piece composed of three separate pieces, an Inuk man and woman carved from serpentine, and a frame, which is held by the stone carvings, to dry a sealskin. There are fantastic details in the piece, such as the baby peeking out from the amauti. This is a great carving to add to your collection.

Check the importation restrictions regarding sealskin in your area before ordering.

About Mosesee Pootoogook

MOSESEE POOTOOGOOK (MOSESIE; MOE)

Date of Birth: June 16, 1977 Male/Female: Male

Place of Birth: Cape Dorset

Mother: Ishuhungitok Pootoogook (deceased)

Father: Paulassie Pootoogook

Mosesie was born in Iqaluit Hospital but has grown up in Cape Dorset. His father, Paulassie Pootoogook, is a well-known Cape Dorset carver and his late mother, Ishuhungitok was an artist. Mosesie’s older brother Anakadlak is also a carver.

Mosesie began carving at the age of eleven. His father taught him to carve and sometimes they worked together making carvings. His favourite subjects to carve are dancing bears, seals, walruses and birds. He prefers to work in serpentine stone because it is softer than marble.
