Description

Arctic Golfer by Isaaci Etidloie. A majestic sculpture.

Born in 1972, Isaci Etidloie began carving at the age of 7.  With skills passed on to him from his artistic family and with a single minded determination, Isaci found his own voice, creating a myriad of sculptures that defy what many would consider to be “Inuit” art.
In this carving we see him during a period when he was approaching  “Western” sports such as skiing, swimming, gymnastics and golf.  His carvings depict people playing basketball, baseball and of course, hockey. These  sculptures show  his exquisite  rendering of the human body  in motion.
For his many professional achievements, check the biography label above.

Biography of Isaaci Etidloie

ISAACI ETIDLOIE
Born: November 15, 1972 Male
Resided: Cape Dorset
Sculpture
Died: 2014

Isaac Etidloie was born on November 15, 1972. He comes from a family of well-known artists from cape Dorset, the most art productive community on Baffin Island, Nunavut.

Isaac is the son of cape Dorset carver Etulu Etidlui known primarily, for his lovely loons mounted on either stone, or a piece of caribou antler, and the grandson of renowned graphic artists Etidlooie and Kingmeata Etidlooie. His uncle Kelly is also a talented sculptor, mostly known for his lively carvings of narwhals.

Picking up his first set of hand tools at a young age, his earliest subject matter was filled with figures engaged in the daily practices of nomadic Inuit life. Isaac is a very gifted young artist with a tremendous amount of potential. Like his father, Isaci likes to carve birds, but he is equally interested in portraying human figure and mythological imagery, and that is where his great technical control in depicting the movement and proportions is best represented.

Isaac takes great care in choosing the stone. His carvings are made of finest serpentine of varying green shades with gold veining, smoothed and polished to best exhibit the beauty of the stone. Serpentine is a metamorphic rock found on Baffin Island. It is a yery hard stone with a composition similar to Jade.
