Bio Sii Ashoona

Born in 1967 (Cape Dorset, Nunavut)

Sii Ashoona is a fourth generation artist in the Ashoona family. He grew up in Kinngait alongside Shuvinai Ashoona, Goota Ashoona and Napachie Ashoona. Coming from a family of artists, he was introduced to the art world from a young age. Sii creates a variety of sculptures with more traditional themes ranging from dancing animals to shamans and Sedna.

Ashoona carves in the local stone called serpentine. It is indigenous to Baffin Island, with a structure similar to jade. The colour of the stone can vary from light green to brown or even black.
