Manuel was born in Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador in 1974. He spent his first 14 years on the Island of Newfoundland, but has made Goose Bay his home since then. In the late 90’s, his brother Dale Ford started carving stone and bone. A year or two later, inspired by seeing the work of Dale and other carvers, and after his father-in-law gave him some whale jawbone, he also started carving. With that and access to some jade-like northern Labrador serpentine, he found himself carving most of his pieces from this beautiful stone. Over more than a decade, Manuel has carved both small and large sculptures of animals and people and captured activities such as hunting, fishing and drum dancing. About carving, he remarks that he is proud to know that people all over the world have pieces of his work. Manuel continues to pursue his main occupation as a construction tradesman, but in his spare time he still likes to produce beautiful pieces of artwork.
