Description

This is a wonderfully detailed kayak by Cornelius Bonnetplume. The carving has come to us through the second hand market. As can be seen from the photographs, the right hand is possibly missing a harpoon, but it could also be that that one is lashed to the kayak. The hand has been repaired but it does not take away from the beauty of the kayak. The rawhide ropes and harpoons are nicely detailed. A lovely kayak model.
Cornelius Bonnetplume comes from the Northwest Territories in Canada. He is recognized for his traditional Indigenous craftsmanship, including handcrafting intricate, detailed sculptures. His traditional carvings of kayaks frequently feature a wood frame overlaid with animal skin (such as hide or sealskin), complete with a hand-carved seated hunter figure holding a harpoon.
