This Legend Face by Charlie Ookpik is a great example of the Gjoa Haven artistic style.
Charlie’s work, with the big inlaid slanted eyes , the wide flat nose with large exaggerated nostrils and a wide grin, represents the outlandish, scary, grotesque, distinct style typical of Gjoa Haven.
Gjoa Haven art is very evocative of primal fears, yet at the same time there is something impish, mischievous, and sympathetic in Charlie’s Legend Face.
This is a wonderful example and a great collectors item.
