Description
This lovely stone etching Sledding by Mary Alaku from Ivujivik is almost like a story on its own, like turning pages in a children’s book.
Mary Alaku is from a large family. Her father is the talented carver Tivi Paningayak. She has a love of drawing that originates from watching her father making prints in the early 70’s. She has brought this interest into soapstone.
Although she can carve animals and figurines, she mostly produces works in the form of “plaques” or stone etchings; images that are etched directly onto the previously polished stone. She has also used pen and ink to draw onto driftwood she finds on the shores around Ivujivik.
She has participated in a few printmaking workshop offered to Nunavik artist in different villages. Always eager to learn, she has added making storybooks to her many abilities. She now represents the Ivujivik Co-op as a director.
