Description
Transformation by Malaya Pitsiulak from Pangnirtung
Malaya Pitsiulak was born in 1983 in Opingivik, an uninhabited Baffin Island offshore island located in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in Nunavut’s Qikiqtaaluk Region. Her father was Lypa Pitsiulak. Malaya lives and works in Pangnirtung (Nunavut) and she is possibly the only female carver left in Pangnirtung. She started carving when she was thirteen years old. She prefers carving transformations, such as humans turning into animals. She heard stories about shaman turning humans into animals: they could become a bird or a wolf, ptarmigan or geese. Malaya was part of the project-exhibition Arctic Adaptations for the Venice Biennale in 2014 and has exhibited in Washington, D.C. (USA).
