Description

Kneeling Caribou by Sangani Osuitok  of Kinngait, Nunavut, Canada.

The late Sangani Osuitok (1961-2011) was born in Cape Dorset, Nunavut Territory.  Like the Ashevak family, the Osuitok has a long standing tradition of producing outstanding visual artists. Osuitok was a carver and enjoyed the caribou as his favorite subject.

His father was renowned Inuit master artist Osuitok Ipeelee, with whom he often collaborated. His mother was also an artist, Nipishi Osuitok. The artist learned a great deal about carving by watching his father. The father and son duo carried unique styles through all of their artwork. This Caribou figure is positioned in one of its classic postures. It is a perfect example of the stylistic legacy they carried in the world of Inuit sculpture.

Sangani Osuitok was based out of Cape Dorset his entire life.
