Description
This Muskox signed syllabics by ᓴᑎ comes from Baker Lake This muskox is carved from the local hard black stone representing the particular aesthetic that comes from Baker Lake region: very powerful and almost monolithic. Baker Lake is the only inland community in Canada’s arctic, located on the Thelon Heritage River in the Kivalliq region. Known for its arts community, Baker Lake enjoys the Jessie Oonark Centre which houses workspaces for carvers, seamstresses, jewellers and printmakers. Carvings from this area are made from local basalt stone and are often minimal in style, in part due to the hardness of the stone, and not with a lot of surface detailing, just very solid representations of the subjects.
The carving has come to us from a private collection of Baker Lake art, purchased directly in the community around 2002. A nice carving.
